This weeks episode looks like it was setting up the sides for whatever conflict will be driving the rest of the season. There were really no questions answered and a few more raised (which is getting a bit frustrating at this late stage in the series). But hopefully with everything in motion now the rest of the season will play out and give us the ending we all want.
Los Angeles
Sayid is in a cab outside a house. The driver says that he will have to charge him for waiting and Sayid pays him off and exits, carrying a bouquet of flowers.
He rings the bell and is greeted by Nadia who hugs him warmly. They are interrupted by the arrival of two children (who call him "Uncle Sayid") and Omer, Nadia's husband and Sayid's brother. Omer asks Sayid why he is bringing flowers for his wife and there is a bit of an awkward moment but then Omer and Sayid embrace as well.
Later the entire family is eating dinner and talking about Sayid's trip to Australia where he says he was translating documents for an oil company. Nadia talks about how well Omer's business is doing and says that he has opened another store. Omer tries to act modest but is interrupted by a phone call. Nadia scolds him, saying that they agreed to have no phone calls over dinner. Omer says dinner is over because this is a business call.
The two children ask Sayid if he brought them anything from Australia. He tells them to look in his suitcase and they run off. While they are gone, Nadia asks Sayid if he got her letters and why he didn't reply. Sayid looks uncomfortable but is prevented from answering by the return of the children with their gifts; boomerangs from Australia. One of them also has a picture of Nadia and asks Sayid why he has her picture in his luggage. Sayid and Nadia both look uncomfortable and become even more so when they realize that Omer has entered the room and heard the question as well.
Later that night, Sayid is sleeping on the sofa and is awakened by Omer. Omer tells him that he borrowed money from someone "not a bank" in order to open the second store. He says he paid back the loan but that the person he borrowed from is still demanding "interest" and says that he will have to keep paying.
Sayid offers to help Omer with money but Omer says that isn't what he needs. He says the person he borrowed the money from will continue to be a threat to him, Nadia and the children unless Sayid does something about them. He says that he knows what Sayid did during the war. Sayid says that he "isn't that person" anymore and refuses to help.
The next morning, Sayid walks the children to the school bus. As it leaves, Nadia runs up to him and says that Omer is in the hospital.
They arrive at the hospital and find that Omer is being taken into surgery. They are told that he was mugged and badly beaten outside his store.
As Sayid and Nadia are rushing down a hallway in the hospital they pass Jack walking the other way. Neither seems to notice or recognize the other.
Sayid becomes angry and starts to leave but Nadia stops him. She says that whatever happened to Omer was something he brought on himself and that she doesn't want Sayid going after whoever attacked him. She manages to talk Sayid down and convinces him to go home to wait for the children.
Nadia arrives home late that evening to find Sayid fixing a vase that was damaged in a "boomerang incident". She tells him that Omer is out of surgery but is still in bad shape.
She asks Sayid again about the picture of her he carries with him and asks, since he obviously cares so much for her, why he pushed her towards his brother. Sayid says that it is because of all the bad things he has done in his life and that he didn't deserve someone like her.
It looks like much of Sayid's history is the same in this timeline as it was in the original but here he didn't lose track of Nadia. On the other hand, here he would not marry her because of his past actions while in the original timeline he did marry her once they were reunited after his escape from the Island.
The next day Sayid is walking to a car when an SUV stops and two people get out. They say they want to talk to Sayid but he refuses to go with them until they make a veiled threat against the children.
The two take Sayid to the back of a restaurant where someone is making breakfast. The person asks Sayid if he wants eggs and says that he is good at making eggs. Sayid declines. The person sits down with his own breakfast and introduces himself as Keamy.
A few crossovers here. The restaurant they are in looks to be the same one where Naomi recruited Miles to come to the Island in the fifth season episode Some Like it Hoth. Keamy was the leader of the mercenaries on the Freighter; he killed Alex and was later killed by Ben in the Orchid station.
Keamy asks if Sayid's brother is all right, saying that he heard that Omer had been mugged in front of his own store. Sayid asks if Keamy had anything to do with that and Keamy denies it. Keamy does admit to loaning Omer the money to open the store but says that Omer has not paid him back. He says that Omer needs to take care of his family and asks if Sayid wants to take care of the family as well.
Sayid leaps up and grabs Keamy's henchman standing next to him. The other henchman fires, hitting the man Sayid is holding. Sayid then takes the man's gun and shoots the other henchman before turning to Keamy.
Keamy starts backing away, saying he will forgive Omer's debt and leave him alone if Sayid will just forget the whole thing. Sayid says he can't and shoots him.
Sayid then hears a sound from elsewhere in the restaurant. He follows the sound to a refrigerator where he finds a bound, gagged and beaten up Jin. Sayid removes the gag and Jin says something in Korean. Sayid can't understand him and all Jin can say is "No English".
Why is Jin here?
We know Jin was supposed to be meeting someone for Mr. Paik and that he was supposed to deliver a watch (at least) to that person. Was that person Keamy? When we last saw Jin he was having some trouble with customs bringing some money into the country. Was he unable to bring it in and did that have something to do with why he was beaten up and left in a freezer?
Some other speculation. Omer says that he had paid Keamy off and Keamy says that he had not. Presumably Keamy is the one who is lying, but this is Lost so who knows. For that matter, Keamy also says that he had nothing to do with Omer's attack; was he lying there as well?
For that matter, suppose it was Jin who beat up Omer? That would be an interesting twist.
((One more aside... Sayid's brother is named "Omer". One of Keamy's henchmen is named "Omar". Writers, don't do that to us poor recappers!))
Island
Sayid goes to Dogen's sanctum and demands to know what is going on and why they tortured him. Dogen responds by saying that everyone has a scale within them measuring good and evil and that the machine they used on him can read that scale. Sayid's scale was tipped "the wrong way". Sayid then asks if Dogen tried to poison him and Dogen admits that he thought it would be better if Sayid was dead. Sayid says that Dogen does not know him and that he is a good man.
Dogen attacks Sayid and the two fight, destroying much of the room in the process. Sayid manages to land a few blows on Dogen but it is clear that Dogen is the superior fighter. Dogen finally pins Sayid down on his desk and is about to stab him when the baseball on the desk falls to the floor. Dogen sees it and stops. He tells Sayid to leave and never return then picks up the baseball.
It may be worth noting that Dogen doesn't say the machine told them Sayid was evil, he says it told them Sayid's scale tilted "the wrong way". It is probably also worth remembering the scale that was on the desk in the cave "Locke" took Sawyer to, the one that had a white and a black stone on it.
Sayid returns outside and starts packing his backpack. Miles sees him and asks where he is going and Sayid responds that he has been "banished". He then says that he cannot understand why the Temple people would save his life then try to kill him.
Miles tells him that the Temple people didn't save his life; they tried but failed. He says that Sayid was dead for two hours before suddenly sitting up and that the Temple people were as surprised as they were. Whoever or whatever brought Sayid back, it wasn't them. Sayid looks thoughtful.
Should we call the Temple Others "Templars"? IIRC the Templars had some thoughts about someone who died then returned to life a few days later...
Meanwhile, "Locke" and Claire are outside the Temple and are standing just outside the circle of ash surrounding it. "Locke" is asking Claire to go inside and deliver a message but she seems somewhat reluctant, asking why he couldn't send Jin or Sawyer in instead. "Locke" says that it has to be her.
Claire asks if he will really help her get Aaron back and "Locke" tells her that he always keeps his word. She then asks if he is planning to hurt the Temple people and he responds "only the ones who won't listen". She heads into the Temple.
Where are Jin and Sawyer? Claire mentions them but they are never seen. It seems obvious that he can't deliver it himself, but is there some particular reason as to why "Locke" wanted Claire to be the one to deliver the message and not someone else?
Inside, the Others pull guns on her but Dogen and Lennon order them not to shoot her. Claire approaches Dogen and tells him that "he" wants to speak to him. When he starts to respond through his assistant she demands that he speak English. Dogen says that he will not go outside the Temple because he knows that if he does then "he" will kill him. Claire responds by saying that Dogen should send someone that he knows "he" will not kill.
Dogen orders Claire to be put into "the pit" then tells Sayid to come with him. Sayid responds by saying that he thought he had been banished and Dogen responds "things have changed".
Dogen leads Sayid back to his sanctum and tells him that Claire is under the control of an angry man. This man had been trapped by Jacob, but now that Jacob is dead he is free. This man is "evil incarnate" and will stop at nothing until every living thing on the Island has been killed.
While he has been talking he has removed a box that had been hidden in a planter and has carefully cleaned it off. He opens it and removes an ornate dagger from within it. He gives the dagger to Sayid and tells him that if he wants to prove he is a good man then he needs to kill the man. He tells Sayid that the man will appear as someone he knows but who is now dead and that he must kill him before he speaks to him because otherwise it will be too late.
Sayid leaves the Temple and enters the jungle where he finds Kate. Kate wants to know what is going on but he tells her to talk to Miles. He also tells her that Claire is at the Temple.
After Kate leaves Sayid hears rustling in the jungle and he looks around. "Locke" appears and says "Hello, Sayid". Sayid stabs him in the chest but "Locke" simply looks down at the dagger before pulling it from his own chest. There is no blood.
"Locke" asks Sayid what "they" told him about him and Sayid responds by telling how Dogen told him that "Locke" was evil. "Locke" says that Dogen wanted Sayid to try to kill him so that he would kill Sayid. He also says that Sayid is the second person he has tried to use that way. He then asks Sayid to deliver a message to Dogen for him and offers Sayid "anything he wants" in return.
Sayid tells him that the only thing he wants died in his arms and that he will never see her again. "Locke" asks "What if you could?"
Dogen's instructions were that Sayid had to kill "Locke" before he spoke, but "Locke" said "Hello, Sayid" before Sayid stabbed him. Is this why he was unaffected? Or, is "Locke" correct and Dogen's plan was only to get Sayid killed.
Also, "Locke" says that this was the second time that Dogen tried to kill him this way. Who was the first person? Claire?
Meanwhile, back at the Temple, Kate arrives and talks to Miles. Miles asks if Sawyer sent her back and says that he hadn't bothered to go looking for Saywer because he knew he wouldn't listen to them. He also confirms that Claire is somewhere in the Temple.
Kate goes looking and runs into Lennon who tries to stop her but Kate insists. He finally agrees to let her talk to Claire for two minutes.
Kate finds Claire in the bottom of a pit babbling nonsense to herself. Claire finally recognizes Kate and says that the Others have her in the pit because they took Aaron and she wants him back. Kate corrects her, saying that she took Aaron off the Island, that he is now a beautiful young boy and that she came back to the Island to rescue Claire so that they could be together. Claire is angry at this news and yells at Kate that she isn't the one who needs to be rescued. Dogen's assistant starts to drag Kate away and Claire yells that "he" is coming and can't be stopped.
Claire had not wanted to believe Jin when he told her that Kate had taken Aaron because "her friend" had told her that the Temple people had him. Jin changed his story. Now Kate has told Claire that she had Aaron. Claire is obviously angered by this.
Presumably she is angry because Kate has been raising Aaron (and she was told long ago that Aaron must not be raised by another) but it is also possible that she is angry because if Kate does have Aaron then everything "her friend" has been telling her is a lie, which means her actions for the last three years may not have been for the reasons she thought they were.
Sayid returns to the Temple and tells Dogen that he didn't kill "Locke". He then stands in the courtyard and loudly tells everyone there that Jacob is dead and that none of the Temple people need to stay there anymore. He then says that "Locke" is leaving the Island and that anyone who wants to leave with him must leave the Temple and join him by sundown; anyone who does not will be destroyed.
There is much panic and most of the Others (including Cindy, Emma and Zach) rush to leave the Temple. Lennon tries to stop them, insisting that they will be safe in the Temple, but few seem to listen to him. Miles asks Saywer if they should leave too but Saywer says that he needs to return Dogen's dagger to him.
Sayid finds Dogen, still holding the baseball, sitting beside the pool and tells him what "Locke" told him. Dogen tells Sayid that he used to be a banker in Osaka. He got a promotion and had too much to drink celebrating then went to pick up his son from baseball, as he did every week. There was an accident and his son was killed. He says that at the hospital he was approached by a man he had never met; Jacob. Jacob offered to save his son, but in return he would have to go to the Island and never see his son again.
Sayid says that Jacob drove a hard bargain. Dogen asks if "Locke" made a similar bargain then says that it is sundown and asks Sayid if he is leaving or planning to stay. He says that he will stay.
Sayid then grabs Dogen and throws him into the pool, holding him under until he drowns. Lennon rushes into the room and, seeing what has happened, yells that Dogen was the only thing keeping "him" out. Sayid says that he knows, then slashes Lennon's throat with the dagger and throws him into the pool as well.
Was killing Dogen part of "Locke"'s instructions to Sayid? Or did Sayid decide to simply take his revenge on Dogen.
Or, is there a third possibility? Both Dogen and Lennon are in a pool that can apparently heal wounds; Sayid's gunshot wound was healed by it. Might they both recover in a short period of time? Maybe killing them and leaving them in the pool was just a way to keep them away from "Locke" in what is about to happen.
There is a familiar roar and Smokey the Monster bursts into the Temple, grabbing and killing any of the remaining Others it can find. Miles and Kate run but split up; Miles looking for a way out and Kate running to help Claire.
Kate gets to the pit holding Claire and throws a rope ladder into it but Claire seems uninterested in escape. The Temple shakes and Kate falls into the pit, hanging onto the ladder as Smokey races past overhead.
Meanwhile, Miles tries to hide in a storeroom but the door is kicked open by Ilana, who has somehow arrived on the scene. Miles exits to find Frank, Ben and Sun and asks Sun if Jin is with them. Sun is delighted to discover that Jin is alive and somewhere nearby but upset that he is no longer there.
Ben goes looking for Sayid and finds him sitting beside the pool with both bodies still floating in it. Ben tells Sayid that there is still time to escape but Sayid says there is not for him. Ben looks frightened and leaves.
Ilana leads the group down what seems to be the same corridor that Hurley was searching the previous episode. She pushes on a particular block and a secret passage opens. Everyone rushes inside and it closes again just as Smokey comes racing down the corridor.
OK, where did Ilana and her group come from? They obviously didn't walk in the front door since it was covered by either guards or smoke monsters. And they obviously didn't come in via the secret passage they left by because Ilana had to look for it. Did they come in the hole under the wall that Jack and company tried to use earlier? Their sudden appearance just seems a bit too fortuitous and unexplained.
Some time later, Sayid, Claire and Kate are walking through the Temple courtyard. Sayid and Claire seem unconcerned but Kate seems a bit taken aback by the evidence of violence around her. She stops briefly to take a rifle from one of the fallen Others before following the other two outside.
There they are met by "Locke" and a group of torch carrying Others. "Locke" smiles at Sayid and Claire then looks at Kate a bit more uncertainly before turning and leading the group into the jungle.
LOST
I had speculated before that if there was a good/evil dichotomy involved in the Jacob/"Locke" conflict then it was possible that Jacob was really on the "evil" side and "Locke" on the "good" side. I'm not so sure that is correct anymore. Of course, it is still possible that the split between the two is not "good" vs "evil" but is instead something else. I'm becoming more confused as to what this could be though.
It looks like we're down to only two groups on the Island again though. Team Jacob seems to consist of Ilana and her group, plus probably Jack and Hurley. Team "Locke" is everyone else. The only missing person at this point seems to be Richard and I suspect that he is going to be very important in whatever is coming.
Just where things are going from here is uncertain. Obviously we now have two clearly defined opposing groups but it isn't clear what the two groups represent. Jacob keeps saying that he wants to "protect the Island" while "Locke" keeps saying he wants to "go home", but it isn't clear why these two goals seem to be mutually exclusive. For example, if "Locke" just wants to leave why did he have to kill everyone in the Temple who didn't join him? If Dogen and his followers had to be killed, does that mean he can just leave now?
Too many questions and not enough answers; sort of normal for Lost. But we're getting down to the wire here; as near as I can tell there are only 12 hours of Lost left. Maybe, now that the final sides have been chosen, we can finally figure out what is going on here.

Why is Sayid sleeping on the sofa? No spare room in the house? Sayid mentions at one point that he is going to Toronto soon. Where does Sayid live Obviously not in LA since he didn't go home, but if LA isn't home to him why did he come there? Just to visit Nadia? Does he routinely stay with them?
