Jack arrives at his home and begins to clean up. As he does, he notices his appendix scar and seems confused by it.
His mother calls, asking if the airline has found his father's body yet (apparently the coffin is in Berlin) and if he will come over and help her look for his father's will. Jack says he will then asks about the scar. She reminds him that his appendix was removed when he was young. Jack doesn't seem to remember this but accepts it. He then notices the time and says he has to go.
Jack drives to a school and picks up what is apparently his son, David. Jack apologizes for being late but David seems sullen and angry. Back at home Jack attempts to talk to David (asking him about reading Alice in Wonderland but David doesn't want to seem to talk. He tells Jack that they only see each other one weekend a month and he just wants to get through it. More conversation is cut off when Jack's mother calls again, asking where he is.
So it appears that in this timeline Jack has a son. It is possible that David's mother is Sarah (who Jack was married to in the original timeline but that marriage seemed to be more recent than David's age would imply. (Since we don't actually see David's mother in this episode it could be Penny for all we know.)
And I'm sorry, but David Shepherd? Can you be a bit more obvious with your symbolism, please?
Jack goes to his mother's and they start searching Christian's office. Jack mentions the problems he is having with David and his mother says that Jack was always afraid of his father. Jack says that Christian was always telling him that he "didn't have what it takes" to amount to anything. Jack's mother offers him a drink. He turns it down and she congratulates him on it. They then find Christian's will and his mother asks if he knows who Claire Littleton is.
Another change from the original timeline. There, Jack was becoming an alcoholic like his father. Here he isn't drinking. We did see several times where Christian told Jack that he couldn't handle things.
It does appear that Christian is Claire's father in this timeline too.
Jack returns home with a pizza but David is not there. He calls him, apologizing and telling him that he is going to David's mother's house and for David to stay there.
Jack goes to the house (letting himself in with a key hidden under a rabbit in the garden). He doesn't find David but he listens to the messages on the answering machine. One is a call from him to David from Australia. The other is from a music conservatory telling David that his performance is scheduled for that afternoon.
There are a lot of Alice in Wonderland references around Jack. He asked David if he was reading Alice in Wonderland earlier in this episode and here he finds the key under a rabbit. Two other Jack-centric episodes are titled "White Rabbit" and "Through the Looking Glass".
Jack arrives at the conservatory and sees a boy talking to his father. The father turns out to be Dogen. Jack seems to recognize Dogen somehow. Dogen says that they should not be placing such young children under so much pressure to succeed and asks Jack how long David has been playing. Jack admits that he does not know.
David plays a piano piece and does extremely well. Jack talks to him and David says he and his mother kept the fact that he was practicing from Jack because they didn't want Jack to be disappointed in him if he failed. Jack tells him that David will never fail him and that he loves him.
It looks like Jack is actively trying to not treat David the way Christian treated him and to be a good father.
Island - The Temple and the Lighthouse
Dogen finds Jack standing in the Temple courtyard and comments that Jack has not left. Jack says that he didn't know he could leave and Dogen says he always has that option. He then asks Jack if his friends are coming back and Jack says they probably aren't. Dogen thanks him for his honesty.
Dogen leaves and Sayid approaches. Sayid asks what Jack is keeping from him and Jack says that the Others wanted him to kill Sayid with the poison pill. He also says that what happened to Sayid has happened to someone else as well. Sayid asks who it was but we do not see Jack's response.
A few thoughts here. Jack could be referring to "Locke" though it is unclear how he would know about that. He could also be talking about Ben, since he was also taken to the Temple after being shot (by Sayid, ironically).
Meanwhile, Hurley and Miles have been playing tic-tac-toe but the game keeps ending in a tie. Hurley goes into the Temple looking for food. He asks for directions from someone stirring something into the pool and the person turns out to be Jacob. Jacob tells Hurley he needs him to do something to help someone find the Island and that he needs to get a pen to write it down.
When Hurley sees Jacob he is stirring something into the pool. What was Jacob doing with the pool; trying to make the water clear again or was he the one who caused it to change in the first place?
Somewhat later, Hurley is wandering through the temple. Dogen comes across him and wants to know what he is doing, ordering him to return to the courtyard. Hurley at first says he is just interested in "Indiana Jones" things like the Temple then Jacob appears to him and tells him to tell Dogen that he is a "Candidate" and that he can go where ever he wants. Dogen accepts this but seems unhappy.
Jacob tells Hurley that Jack has to come with him. Hurley isn't sure how he is going to convince Jack.
Hurley returns to the courtyard and tells Jack about what they need to do. Jack isn't interested until Hurley tells him that Jacob said that Jack "has what it takes". Jack is startled by this and demands to see Jacob for himself but Hurley says that Jacob is dead but will be waiting for them at their destination. Jack agrees to come with Hurley.
Hurley and Jack head out. They find a backpack near a stream and when Jack investigates he finds Kate, who initially pulls a gun before she realizes who he is. Kate tells them that she is not going back to the Temple; instead she is looking for Claire. Jack warns her that the Others at the Temple warned him that something has happened to Claire but Kate insists on continuing to look for her. After she leaves, Hurley asks Jack what happened between him and Kate. Jack says that he just isn't cut out for marriage and children.
Jack's feelings towards children here seems to be the opposite of what he is working for in the other timeline.
Hurley asks why Jack came back to the Island and Jack says it is because he is "broken" and hoped the Island would "fix" him. Hurley says he came back because Jacob asked him to.
Hurley then comments that the two of them being out in the jungle heading someplace strange is just like what they used to do. They find Shannon's old asthma inhaler and realize that they are near the caves. They also find the remains of Jack's father's coffin. Jack admits that he had seen his father and followed him to the caves. He also says that he smashed the coffin because his father wasn't in it. Hurley speculates that the bodies of "Adam" and "Eve" in the cave are two of the original 815 survivors who got thrown backwards in time.
It is interesting to note that Christian Shepherd's body is missing in both timelines.
Continuing on, Hurley and Jack finally reach the Lighthouse; a brick structure several stories high. They break in and climb to the top where they find a large wheel and several mirrors surrounding a firepit. Hurley says they need to turn the wheel to heading 108 and for Jack to tell him when it reaches that point.
As the wheel turns various images appear and disappear in the mirrors. Jack sees something and tells Hurley to stop but it vanishes. Jack turns the wheel back to position 23 which he notices is labeled with his name. He looks at the mirror and sees that it shows his childhood home. Jack gets angry, demands to know why Jacob has been watching him and smashes the mirrors.
The Lighthouse raises quite a few questions. First, in all their time on the Island, why have apparently neither the Losties or the Others found the Lighthouse? (Of course, the Losties never found the Temple either and the Others may simply have been told to stay away by Jacob.) Hurley says they never found the Lighthouse because they weren't looking for it. There is certainly a lot of symbolism in that statement but still...
Of more interest are the various scenes shown in the mirrors. Do they show this world, or the other timeline? There were a lot of names and numbers on the wheel; who are these other people and what is shown in their mirrors? It appears the Numbers are matched up with people based on what the mirrors show when the wheel is turned to that position. Thus, position 23 looks at Jack's home. Does every position on the wheel look in on someone or something?
(When the wheel is being turned we do see some other scenes, including the church where Jin and Sun were married and the church where Sawyer's father's funeral was held. We also note that Kate's name is on the wheel at position 51 (which is not one of the Numbers).)
Later, Jack is sitting outside the Lighthouse staring out to sea. Jacob appears to Hurley who apologizes for not guiding the other people to the Island. Jacob says it is all right and that they will find another way.
Hurley asks Jacob if he meant for Jack to see what he did in the Lighthouse. Jacob says yes, that some people will just do what they were asked by a stranger in a cab but that others need to "look at the ocean for a while". He says that Jack needed to understand how important he was.
He then adds that he needed to get Hurley and Jack away from the Temple because something bad was about to happen there. Hurley wants to rush back to the Temple and warn the others but Jacob says it is already too late.
It isn't clear, but is anyone really coming to the Island or was that just an excuse used by Jacob to get Hurley and Jack to the Lighthouse? If someone is coming, who could it be? (I'm guessing Desmond and Penny.)
Island - The Jungle
Jin is struggling in the leg trap when Claire comes down and, after checking the two Others, releases him. She says that she has been living in the jungle since the other 815 survivors left three years ago. She starts to say more but Jin passes out.
Jin comes to in Claire's camp and finds a doll she has made from animal skins and bones. Before he can look further Claire returns, dragging one of the two Others, apparently still alive. She ties him to a tree, saying that she will torture him to find out where Aaron is.
She leaves briefly and the Other tells Jin to let him go because otherwise Claire will kill both of them. Before he can do anything Claire returns.
Claire treats Jin's wound and tells him that she hasn't been alone in the jungle; she has had a "friend" with her. She insists on knowing if Jin is still her friend. She also says that she knows that the Others have Aaron at the Temple because her father and her "friend" told her they did. She tried to get Aaron back but the Others captured and tortured her. The Other says that was because she had been killing them.
Jin tells Claire that the Others do not have Aaron because Kate took Aaron off the Island. Claire seems to accept this at first then kills the Other with an axe. Jin then says that he lied about Kate having Aaron to try and save the Other's life. He now lies and says he saw Aaron and the Temple and that she will need him to get in. Claire says this is good because if Kate had taken Aaron then she would have had to kill Kate.
About this time "Locke" appears. Jin thinks it is Locke but Claire corrects him, saying it isn't Locke, it is her "friend".
LOST
And things get even more confusing. First, Claire mentions her father and her "friend" as if they are two different people but we suspect that both of them are aspects of Smokey the Monster. So, are there really two different entities or does she just for some reason think there are two. We know it or they are lying to her because it or they told her that the Others had Aaron at the Temple.
Why would they do that? Possibly so that she would attack the Others for them; something they may not be able to do on their own because of the "rules" we have heard mentioned several times. In reality Claire just left Aaron behind when she walked off into the jungle, then Sawyer took him and gave him to Kate. What is the purpose of lying about Aaron's location?
Claire seems to have taken after Rousseau (making her the "crazy Australian woman"). She seems to be disturbed by the loss of Aaron, hence the "doll" she has made. She has definitely changed from her former meek self to a cold-blooded killer. Is this a result of losing Aaron, manipulation by Smokey or because of the "Infection" we have been warned about. (In a possible coincidence note that when she was treating Jin's wounds she commented on the danger of infection on the Island.)
A lot of pieces are now in motion; there are groups scattered all across the Island. Assuming that Sawyer is still with "Locke" then "Locke", Sawyer, Claire and Jin are one group; Sun, Frank, Ilana and Ben are one group; Jack and Hurley are one group; Kate is off by herself; and Sayid, Miles and the Others are one group. Plus whoever is coming to the Island. How many of these are going to wind up together? It is very doubtful that all of them are going to be on the same side in the Jacob/"Locke" conflict.
As a final observation, this is Lost episode 108.
Addendum
To respond to some comments; yes, I caught the scar on Claire's shoulder but forgot to mention it. She mentions being "branded" and being stuck with needles; the same "tests" that Dogen ran on Sayid.
Also, a few people have asked about Kate's name on the Lighthouse wheel. Here's a screenie:
2 comments on Lighthouse:
"He (Jack) also says that what happened to Sayid has happened to someone else as well. Sayid asks who it was but we do not see Jack's response."
I was pretty sure he was referring to Claire since Dogen had just told Jack that his sister was infected just like Sayid. To further support this idea Claire shows the branding of having undergone the same ?tests? as Sayid did later on in the episode. Is the temple pool necessarily part of the infection process? Dogen seemed surprised that Sayid came back from the dead, maybe he wouldn?t have been if he had seen the same process with Claire. Has anyone ever taken the ?test? and actually really passed? I thought that Sayid?s reactions to the test were what any normal person?s reactions would be. Anybody would have screamed in pain, been scarred by the branding etc. so what would a non-infected person?s test results be?
I really enjoy your LOST blog especially your comments in the dashed line boxes. I?m noticing that during this last season I am getting more involved in the online interactivity surrounding LOST and your blog is a regular stop.
Did not anyone catch the 'scar' on Claire's torso? Apparently she went through the same baptism and torture as Sayid.

Jack's confusion over his appendix scar is interesting. In the original timeline he had an emergency appendectomy on the Island. Here, he apparently had one as a child but doesn't remember it (or even remember the scar). At this point in time in the original timeline he would not have had an appendix scar. Is this a sign that things from one timeline are starting to "leak" into the other?
